The Big House is not only a historical symbol for Oakland School, but also a space for offices and classrooms.

The Shepherd House

The Oakland grounds are dominated by the pre-revolutionary “Shepherd House,” which was a girls’ school in the 19th century. Constructed in the mid-1700s and added on to in the mid-1800s when Oakland was a working farm, this structure houses administrative offices and several classrooms. The school’s first dining room was in the Shepherd House.

The Old Kitchen has been at Oakland School since the very beginning.

The School House and Old Kitchen

Behind the Shepherd House are a group of school buildings including the Old Kitchen, which was just a chimney when Mrs. Shepherd first set foot on Oakland Farm in 1922, and the School House built in 1963. The village-like design allows everyone to see and greet one another as they walk to and from their classes.

Students tend to and learn from the historic gardens at Oakland.

Historic Gardens

Historic gardens accent the main grounds and feature some of the original plant selections and a wide array of herbs. A gazebo, built in honor of Joanne and “Pep” Dondero, longtime stewards of the farm and school, houses a swing that is an idyllic spot for reading.

Hillside House

Aptly named, this two-story building is nestled into one of Oakland’s sloping ridges and is where students spend most of their academic day in our Summer program. The Hillside House is central and contains a number of classrooms where children receive phonics, reading, and writing classes.

The Margaret G. Shepherd Gymnasium and Recreation Center was updated in 2023 to include air conditioning.

The Equine Program (Barn and Riding Ring)

A cornerstone of Oakland’s programming is its equine program, which integrates horsemanship with therapeutic and experiential learning. Small-group instruction in the barn helps students develop skills that extend far beyond the saddle like responsibility, self-regulation, and resilience. The Barn and Riding ring were redone in 2025 providing a beautiful place for our student and 16 horses to enjoy and learn together.

The grounds also consist of open fields, wooded areas, and Mechunk Creek, which traverses the woodlands area.

 Oakland’s History

Oakland’s story begins on a small farm in Central Virginia, where one pioneering woman set out to change the future for students with learning differences.

  • In 1950, Margaret G. Shepherd, an experienced teacher, school assistant principal, and founder of her own private school for children in grades K–2, established the Oakland Farm Camp and School for students with reading difficulties. At a time when little was understood about dyslexia and learning differences, she recognized potential. Through phonics-based, multisensory instruction, students from across the South learned to read.

At the request of parents, Mrs. Shepherd founded Oakland School in 1967 as a year-round day and boarding school.

  • In 1974, her daughter Joanne Dondero became Director, alongside her husband, Andrew Dondero, Director of Operations. Together, they expanded enrollment and strengthened campus facilities. They led Oakland until 1993.

During this time, Mrs. Shepherd continued teaching and authored Phonetic and Structural Analysis: The Oakland Way in 1980. A lifelong learner herself, she renewed her teaching certification at age 89 through the University of Virginia, proof of her enduring commitment to students.

  • For more than 75 years, Oakland has remained a leader in educating children with language based learning differences. While research has advanced our understanding of dyslexia, dysgraphia, and attention differences, our foundation remains rooted in Mrs. Shepherd’s time-tested methods, paired with modern research and individualized support.
